Former Congressman Anthony Weiner has pled guilty to underage sexting in a federal case. This stems back to a well publicized incident in 2016 in which he was caught sending inappropriate messages to a 15 year old girl who was a sophomore in high school. Not only was the girl very young, he was fully aware of that fact which made the case more severe. His current wife, Huma Abedin, has finally filed for divorce. Their marriage had been on unstable ground for a long time, even before the sexting rumors began to surface before it became proven fact. Weiner is expected to get anywhere from 21 to 27 months in prison but could get up to 10 years.
Some may see this as a run-of-the-mill case of inappropriate behavior from a public official but this is much, much deeper. Huma Abedin (Weiner’s wife) is a very close friend and confidant of Hillary Clinton. She also works in the federal government. Hillary had been sending Huma many emails from the now-infamous private email server that Mrs. Clinton had in the basement of her home. Huma would often forward the emails to Anthony Weiner’s laptop to print them out. Another explanation behind how emails between Hillary Clinton and Huma Abedin wound up on Weiner’s laptop is that she logged onto her email server from a desktop application like Outlook and that the emails automatically “synced” or downloaded themselves onto the computer.
Emails on Weiner’s laptop between Huma and Hillary were incidentally discovered when federal authorities were looking for evidence of underage sexting from the aforementioned situation. This happened after Hillary was exonerated by an FBI investigation earlier in 2016. Since new emails had been discovered, then-FBI Director James Comey wrote a letter about it letting the public know what they’d found. This happened in late October, right before the election. Hillary and much of the media tend to blame this for her loss but obviously, there were many more skeletons in her closet many of which have not fallen out. And at the end of the day, Trump was the better candidate.
